“Learning from the past for the future!”

We were guests in Krakow between 12 and 16 June 2023 and worked with pupils and teachers from our Polish partner school ZSEL No1 as part of a joint project week entitled "Learning from the past for the future". We looked at selected stages of the German-Polish past and present and worked out possible courses of action for the common future.

Programme items

Sunday
Arrival and exploration of the immediate surroundings of the accommodation and the city centre / old town

Monday
Welcome at the Polish partner school: including a tour of the school, getting to know the Polish pupils, small Polish or German course and getting to know Polish culture, presentation of the CvO GyO by our pupils.
Afternoon: Guided tour of the Jewish Quarter (Kazimierz) and the former ghetto.

Tuesday
Topic: German-Polish past - creating explanatory videos on selected historical stages.
Afternoon: Guided tour and walking tour of Oskar Schindler's enamel factory (film set of the US feature film "Schindler's List" (1993) based on a true story)

Wednesday
Full-day event at the Auschwitz-Birkenau Museum and Concentration Camp - arrival and departure by bus, guided tour of the main camp (Auschwitz I) and the Birkenau extermination camp (Auschwitz II).

Thursday
Topic: German-Polish present and strengthening cooperation: "Learning from the past for the future!" - Creation of a flyer or comparable product about German-Polish cooperation from various points of view (including institutions such as the Goethe-Institut, German-Polish Youth Office, German-Polish Institute, Weimar Triangle).
Afternoon: Visit to Plaszow concentration camp and the memorial site there

Friday
Project conclusion - making collages about the project week.
Afternoon: Guided tour of the Wieliczka salt mine (one of the oldest and most famous salt mines and a UNESCO World Heritage Site)
